Longtime fashion journalist Richard Buckley, fashion designer Tom Ford’s husband, has died at 72.
“It is with great sadness that Tom Ford announces the death of his beloved husband of 35 years, Richard Buckley,” Ford said in a statement to People.
The statement continued, “Richard passed away peacefully at their home in Los Angeles last night with Tom and their son Jack by his side. He died of natural causes after a long illness.”
Ford, 60, met Buckley at a New York fashion show in 1986, and the pair married in 2014. They share an eight-year-old son, Alexander John ‘Jack’ Buckley Ford.
Buckley, who was born in New York and raised in the US, France and Germany, got his start in the fashion industry in 1979 at New York Magazine.
Over the course of his decades-long career, he went on to work at magazines including Women’s Wear Daily and Vanity Fair.
In 1990, he moved to Milan, where Ford designed for Gucci while Buckley served as the European editor of Mirabella Magazine and a contributing editor at Italian Vogue. A renowned fashion journalist, Buckley then became the Editor in Chief of Vogue Hommes International.
The fashion world is mourning the loss of the iconic journalist, with Stella McCartney — who is also Jack’s godmother — leading the outpouring of tributes with a sweet Instagram post Tuesday.
“What a gentle man; grace and charm filled the room when he was in it,” she wrote in part, adding, “He was so loved, so respected and so madly and passionately dedicated to you, Tom and Jack, that his life was fully complete.”
